The Senior Director of National News and Media is dedicated to securing multi-regional, national and, as strategically appropriate, international exposure within leading industry, consumer and business media, as well as through key social influencers, for Senior Cabinet executives, as well as executives and thought-leaders in Clinical, Academic, and Innovation strategic pillars.
Build coalitions across the organization, at all levels, to advance reputation-enhancing work including organizational national positioning, executive positioning and issues management.
Actively pitches national earned media placements, and manages relationships with national journalists to advance reputation for Jefferson leadership and expertise.
Manage relationships across Jefferson’s four pillars – clinical, academic, philanthropy, innovation -- and external agencies to forward national institutional and executive positioning.
Build and foster relationships with major national media contacts in outlets important to Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health academic and clinical offerings to help drive new patient growth, undergraduate and graduate student enrollment, faculty recruitment and research grants while elevating brand awareness for Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health.
Collaborate with the news and media leads for Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health.
Develop and execute on national and international media pitches across a wide variety of popular and trade outlets in architecture, business, design, fashion, engineering, health, innovation, medicine, science, research and textiles.
Direct external executive positioning work including speaking engagements, platform development and execution, media relations, digital presence and influencer activities.
Build comprehensive plans for national media, including public appearances, one-on-one meetings with other influencers and social media amplification; may include travel with executives. Develop contacts within the national conference circuit.
Brief the organization’s most senior leadership on positioning opportunities and issues. Prepare executives and spokespersons.
Promote faculty and clinical experts on a national level to enhance the organizational reputation and rankings.
Direct communications activities with substantial potential impact to the enterprise; participates in crisis communications activities with localized scope.
Collaboratively build integrated communication strategies and cascades (including all stakeholder communication and media relations) for sensitive or high stakes issues.
Responsible for building (and subsequently maintaining) a comprehensive crisis communication plan for a variety of scenarios affecting education, health and innovation and to support enrollment and philanthropy efforts.
Responsible for identifying and directing agencies for niche issues management projects.
Work with the VP, Chief Communications Officer for Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health in the national and international promotion of Jefferson to achieve organizational goals.
In conjunction with the VP, serves as strategic advisor to the Senior Vice Presidents of Marketing and Communications for Jefferson Health and Thomas Jefferson University, as well as the organization’s executive leadership
Understanding of common high-stakes issues in clinical and/or University environments preferred, but not required.
Demonstrated tact and diplomacy
Effective both in independent work, and in collaborative environments
Prior success navigating matrixed work environments a plus
Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.
Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, Media Relations, or related field.
Master’s Degree in a communications field in preferred (public relations, journalism, communications, English)
10 years of experience preferably in a university, health organization, and/or agency setting with placements on a multi-regional and national scale required.
Prior demonstrated experience with executive-level work settings and executive brand management required.
Prior demonstrated experience with securing marquee keynote and panelist positions preferred.
Experience with Microsoft Office products
Experience with PR Newswire and other associated Media Relations-based software and services required
