Provide care to the patient receiving Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) with the primary responsibility being the maintaining appropriate ECMO support, administering medications and blood products as ordered, troubleshooting equipment, assessing the circuit, managing circuit emergencies, obtaining blood samples from the circuit, running thromboelastographs (TEGs) and anticoagulation tests (ACTs).
Provides on-call availability in conjunction with other ECMO Specialists.
Identifies patients who are potential ECMO candidates.
Manages the ECMO system including the blood pump, tubing, artificial oxygenator and related equipment.
Maintains normal acid-base balance, oxygenation, and ventilation needs of the patient via the ECMO pump and circuit.
Administers blood and blood by-products via the ECMO pump and circuits Medication delivery via the ECMO pump and circuit.
Maintain proper anticoagulation via the ECMO pump and circuit.
Provides appropriate, age-specific, patient and family education as it relates to ECMO management.
Assists in intra-hospital transport of patients receiving ECMO.
Primes the ECMO circuit with perfusion services.
Maintains clinical record of all Patient and ECMO vital signs and data.
Collects arterial blood gas samples and processes through point of care blood analyzers.
