Guthrie Clinic (Guthrie), a nationally recognized integrated health system seeks a talented, innovative physician executive to serve as its next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This opportunity is available due to the planned retirement of Joseph Scopelliti, M.D., who is retiring in 2021 after 15 years as CEO.
Founded in 1910 by Dr. Donald Guthrie, the Guthrie Clinic was one of the nation's earliest multi-specialty group practices, founded by Dr. Guthrie on the principles he learned as a resident at the Mayo Clinic. This rich, pioneering history and the values that originated with the group practice model of teamwork, putting patients first continue to guide Guthrie today. Located in Sayre, PA, Guthrie is a non-profit integrated health system located in north central Pennsylvania and upstate New York, serving patients from a 12-county service area. Guthrie comprises a research institute, home care/hospice, hospitals in Sayre, PA (including a satellite campus in Towanda, PA); Corning, NY; Troy, PA and Cortland, NY, as well as a multi-specialty group practice of more than 325 physicians and 250 advanced practice providers offering 47 specialties through a regional office network which provides primary and specialty care in 22 communities.
Guthrie enjoys a strong reputation as a premier high-performing, community-focused, stable health system with a commitment to medical education and clinical research. Guthrie’s approach to growth initiatives and disciplined cost management has allowed the organization to maintain a strong balance sheet and remain independent during a time of major consolidation. Guthrie’s annual revenue has grown to nearly $1 billion and the system is one of the largest employers in the Twin Tiers region. It has an A+ credit rating from Standard & Poor’s, reflecting Guthrie’s solid market share supported by management's growth through strategic affiliations that have increased the clinic's geographic reach in its rural service area. Guthrie is a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network and is the first health system based in Pennsylvania and New York to join this network. Guthrie has achieved Epic Gold Stars Level 10 in recognition of its exceptional use of the electronic health record (EHR) using the Epic EHR. Additionally, Guthrie has developed significant graduate medical education programs.
The next CEO will be joining Guthrie during a pivotal time. We seek candidates who bring experience leading a growing, complex system in a time of transformational change in the delivery and financing of healthcare. Anticipating, adapting, and innovating new operational, care delivery, and financial models will be a critical factor for future success. The next CEO will advance initiatives that will optimize performance and improve the health of Guthrie's communities.
The successful candidate will be a seasoned physician leader with experience at the senior executive level in a multi-entity healthcare system. She/he will demonstrate a strong track record in advancing strategic initiatives, evolving and aligning system-level operational structures and performance improvement processes, and leadership team selection and development. The CEO will be a values-driven leader who inspires others with strong emotional and social intelligence, and a demonstrated ability to connect with individuals in an authentic, meaningful way. Candidates should be comfortable living and working in a rural area, including having a passion for designing and delivering healthcare for rural communities.
