Public Health Program Manager

The Center for Public Health Practice at the American Public Health Association develops programs to promote healthy living and prevent adverse impacts to community health. We also engage in initiatives to educate the public health workforce by enhancing their competence and skills in public health practice. As a member of this department, the Public Health Program Manager draws upon knowledge in public health, behavioral sciences, epidemiology, and health communications and applies this expertise to the management and development of various projects at the America Public Health Association. They will also develop reports, factsheets, webinars and other products and identify and disseminate best practices to support APHA’s public health capacity building efforts. The Public Health Practice Manager will report to the Director of the Center for Public Health Practice and Professional Development and work closely with others within the Center. Research and assist with the development of a range of documents, including white papers, reports, issue briefs, and factsheets, on a select public health issues including community health, injury and violence prevention, chronic disease prevention and public health infrastructure. Support APHA’s public health workforce capacity building efforts, including researching and developing resources and trainings. Develop social media messaging. Update and maintain select web pages. Provide support in monitoring and evaluating public health practice initiatives. Host and coordinate webinars on public health topics. Serve as project manager for select programmatic activities. Manage consultant contracts and projects ensuring they are completed in a timely fashion and within budget. Represent APHA at internal and external meetings. Coordinate and schedule stakeholder group meetings. Perform other duties as assigned. This is a one-year grant-funded position, with the possibility of continuation based on funding and performance.

Master’s degree in public health, or related field and at least 3 years of public health experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Excellent analytic and research skills. Excellent writing and communications skills – in particular the ability to translate science and other technical information into accessible language for public health professionals and other identified audiences. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work productively as member of a team. Motivation and ability to be self-directed. Experience managing multiple projects. Strong project management experience. Must have experience developing content for Social Media content. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs. Experience creating public health presentations and presenting to external parties at all levels. Experience leading and motivating teams, committees, and partnerships. Basic HTML and website design knowledge are a plus. Travel to the Annual Meeting is required with other occasional travel possible.
Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
