Performs a variety of patient care duties and tasks to support the work of the nursing staff in the hemodialysis unit and to facilitate delivery of care to patients. Provides direct physical and emotional care to patients in the hemodialysis unit.
Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation until other personnel arrive.
Performs system and equipment checks and maintenance as assigned.
Prepares patient for dialysis by obtaining pre-dialysis vital signs and weights.
Sets up, primes, and tests dialysis machines.
Observes and monitors patients for change in status and reports to charge nurse.
Initiates hemodialysis via fistula or graft.
Discontinues hemodialysis treatments and cleans machine per policy.
Ensures adequate dialysate supplies are available to perform hemodialysis treatments, to include mixing bicarbonate and acid solutions.
Weigh patients pre- and post-dialysis as required by staffing.
Assists with restocking the hemodialysis unit; empties linen hampers and replaces bags.
Assists with disinfection of all dialysis equipment, to include dialysis machines, bicarbonate mixer/loop, acid mixer.
Procures supplies from all outside and internal sources as needed.
Holds venipuncture sites as requested by the nurse.
Directs patients and visitors to proper sources of information.
Files documentation in the computerized charting system.
Assists in the orientation of other technicians to the dialysis unit.
