This Nurse Manager position is located in Nursing Service at the White River Junction, VT location. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week. It is preferred that the Mental Health Nurse Manager have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in nursing or in a related field and board certification from a VA-approved certifying body is also preferred. The Nurse Manager will oversee Ground East, the inpatient mental health unit, and the Residential Recovery Center, the hospital's substance abuse treatment program. The Nurse Manager executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. He/she functions as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the operation of a designated unit, including management, supervision and evaluation of care delivered by nursing and other allied health care staff. In addition, applies skills necessary to identify, coordinate and/or identify discipline-specific education, as well as training in leadership, professional staff development and emerging needs, to all levels of staff. The Nurse Manager provides oversight for the administration of leave, counseling and disciplinary actions. He/she is responsible for contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidence-based nursing standards of practice. The Nurse Manager creates a positive work environment which enhances care delivery and professional development of clinically competent staff. Promotes, creates, demonstrates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. Designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. This includes the authority to accept, amend, or reject the work of assigned personnel. Has continuing responsibility for all the following functions: Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work Assigning work to assigned personnel based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates Evaluating the performance of assigned personnel Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of assigned personnel Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to assigned personnel on work and administrative matters Hearing and resolving complaints of assigned personnel and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate Identifying developmental and training needs of assigned personnel and providing or making provision for such development and training Additionally responsible for performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction; patient and employee safety, interviewing applicants, employee relations, standards of care and practice, the work environment, and accreditation and regulatory standards. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. Responsible for staffing their units on a continual basis (24/7), validating data used for the staffing methodology process, and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. Responsible for time scheduling of the unit, coaches staff, deals with employee conduct and performance issues, completes recurring reports and performance evaluations in a timely manner. Participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. Identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. Works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles. In the absence of a Nurse Manager, a cross-covering Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues.
