The Assistant Chief, Dental Service either directly or indirectly supervises the performance of staff privileged and/or employed in the Service. Serves as a practicing dentist in all aspects of general dentistry. Interacts with staff of other services, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs of Dental Services at other VA's, staff of the VA Office of Dentistry, representatives of affiliated institutions, professional organizations, and veterans' groups, and with individual veterans. The Assistant Chief, Dental Service of the VAGLAHCS will serve as the Supervisory (Lead) Dentist for dental clinic at Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center (SACC). SACC will be the primary duty location of the incumbent. Additional supervisory responsibilities will include oversight of community-based outreach clinics (Santa Maria, Ventura & Bakersfield). Clinical Duties: The clinical duties (60-70%) will include performing a full scope of general dental procedures. In the course of fulfilling his/her role, the Assistant Chief, Dental Service also interacts with staff of other Services within the facility or at other VA's, VA Office of Dentistry, affiliated institutions, and individual Veterans Providing direct patient care consistent with his/her clinical privileges. Perform oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity. Diagnose pathological or irregular oral conditions. Administer local anesthesia. Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work. Perform routine endodontic procedures. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures. Administrative Duties (30-40%): Serve as the Assistant Chief/Lead Dentist for Dental Clinic at SACC and CBOCs. Responsible for assisting Service Chief with oversight of operations of Dental Service and educational programs. Serve as the lead for projects that may enhance access to care, modernize clinics, and take active part in setting and achieve strategic goals in alignment with the facility's goals. Responsible for clinic administration in compliance with VHA, Medical Center and Dental Services Directives, Policies and Procedures. Recommending and sustaining Service-level policy initiatives to ensure compliance with The Joint Commission's standards. Assists with recommending staffing, space, equipment and other resources needed by the Service, based on data Analyze reports used in management of Dental Service and present reports to Service Chief as assigned. Determining the qualifications and competence of Service personnel who provide patient care services and who are not licensed independent practitioners. Continuously assessing and improving the performance of care and services provided with respect to access to care, quality indicators and productivity. Maintaining quality control programs, as appropriate. Orienting and providing in-service training and continuing education of all persons in the Service in collaboration with staff of other services. Assists with oversight of Care in the Community/Consultation review process. Designating a person to act in his/her absence so that administrative direction is provided at all times. Establishing and assists the Chief of Dental Service in implementing patient/resident care policies, personnel policies, and other policies of the Service and GLAHCS Evaluating and implementing, as feasible, any recommendations from RVAHCS committees and consultants.
