Northport VAMC is a level 1c complexity facility which serves the Veterans of Long Island, New York providing acute inpatient as well as comprehensive outpatient services in the medical, surgical, primary care and mental health specialties at the main campus in Northport and 5 Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Northport VA is an affiliate of the State University of New York medical school at Stony Brook. The Chief, Surgical Service is an actively practicing surgeon in either general surgery or any of the surgical specialties who will provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership to the Surgical Service to ensure achievement of the Medical Center's clinical, research, and educational goals. The Chief of Surgery reports directly to the Chief of Staff (COS)and will support the COS in carrying out the VA mission and ensure compliance with VA and facility directives. The incumbent will have strong leadership abilities in both clinical and administrative aspects of surgical care as well as strong teaching skills and commitment. The Chief of Surgery will ensure the development and implementation of a comprehensive healthcare delivery system in coordination with the VHA Mission; will identify and address opportunities to improve patient care within the facility; will maintain a collaborative partnership with all other services, local and VISN leadership as well as the university affiliate and community partners. Chief, Surgery has oversight of the various sections within the service and ensures they are compliant with VHA policy. Incumbent maintains privileges and practice in his/her specialty field; participates in surgical call coverage for consultation and patient care; and ensures high quality patient care is delivered in a resource efficient manner. Chief of Surgery is tasked with promoting the development of healthcare professionals within the service; participating in the selection of qualified professional staff and ensuring that recruitment and hiring meets VA and academic affiliation requirements. The incumbent will be knowledgeable in the functioning of residency and allied health educational programs within the service; schedule and participate in monthly staff meetings; ensure appropriate systems are in place to review, analyze, and evaluate patient care activities; oversee all monitoring and tracking of performance measures under Surgical Services scope of practice; and insure compliance with VA, and all accrediting bodies pertinent regulations, policies and standards. The Chief, Surgical Service will be available to provide consultation and facilitate disposition of surgical care for our veteran patients. Incumbent will demonstrate the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to internal and external customers, maintain the confidentiality of patient/employee information, and to function and work in a safe manner, as well as possess the knowledge of changes associated with ageing and principles of human growth and development and the ability to assess and interpret patient data, and identify age-specific needs such as incorporating age specific factors, and needs into patient care activities. The Chief Surgery will insure surgical staff maintain a safe working environment, in which we identify and address issues and concerns as they relate to discrimination, biases and all potential safety problems in a proactive manner.
