Pay Basis: Monthly Job Description The Counseling Services at Tennessee State University requires an Assistant Director who assists the Director in providing administration direction for the University Counseling Center to include policies and procedures guided by best practices. Additionally, the Assistant Director should be a clinician who enjoys clinical work in a center that provides brief services to college students to include individual and group therapy with opportunities for conjoint therapy. This clinician will be capable of providing initial consultation, diagnostic interviewing, brief counseling or psychotherapy, crisis intervention, management of psychiatric emergencies, and outreach to students and staff. This professional must thrive in a team environment in which they will engage in the role of a team member, provide and receive consultation with their peers, and openly function as part of a coordinated unit. To succeed in this role, the Assistant Director will possess strong administrative and management skills, be a strong generalist, and may have an area of further interest or specialization.
The Assistant Director will provide direct, culturally competent clinical service to students (counseling and assessment), and participate in outreach and programming. The primary role of direct clinical service will include individual and group counseling, as well as contributions to assessment, evaluation, and testing as determined by training and experience. Additional service to the campus community will include participation in crisis response. The Assistant Director will also support the Director in coordinating the practicum and internship training program.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or a related field from an accredited college or University and completed clinical training experience in practicum and internship is required. Licensed in the State of Tennessee or eligible for full licensure in the State of Tennessee upon hire. Three years of counseling consultation, outreach, case management, and clinical supervision experience in a University/College Counseling Center. Ability to manage crises and appropriate referrals. Ability to work collegially as part of a treatment team/multidisciplinary staff, Experience and skills in providing consultation, demonstrated skills in providing compassionate, ethical, professional, optimistic, culturally sensitive and nonjudgmental care. Specialty in an area or areas that are pertinent to the population (e.g., experience with trauma, eating disorders, cognitive behavioral, etc.). Experience working with diverse and multicultural populations. An understanding of the mental health needs of college students and campus best practices. Excellent administrative, interpersonal and communication skills
