Supervises psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and other Mental Health staff (Psychology, Social Work, Peer Support) on the MHU. S/He collaborates with other VA departments and services that contribute to the provision of mental health care on the acute/inpatient setting. Medical Director, Inpatient Mental Health Service Responsibilities: Oversees the administration and operations of psychiatric medical care at the Mental Health Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (MHU) at the VA Reno Medical Center. Supervises psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and other Mental Health staff (Psychology, Social Work, Peer Support) on the MHU. Collaborates with other VA departments and services that contribute to the provision of mental health care on the acute/inpatient setting (e.g. Pharmacy, Nursing, VA Police, et al.). Collects and synthesizes data regarding inpatient services for Quality Management and leadership review. Maintains a panel of patients on the inpatient psychiatric unit, including completing admissions and discharges, management of psychiatric and medical conditions, and consulting with other specialists, as well as ordering laboratory and x-ray services. Participates in the consultation of patients with possible mental health disorder who are admitted onto the medical/surgical floors of the general hospital. Collaborates with MH leadership and other VA departments, assists in developing RPIWs, Action Plans, to enhance services on MHU and in closing gaps in care across the facility Directs the educational experiences for psychiatry residents/medical students on the MHU and participates in the educational experiences of trainees from a variety of mental health disciplines. Serves as subject matter expert and advises leadership regarding standard of care for psychiatric practice regarding a wide variety of mental health disorders often requiring inpatient psychiatric stabilization, and the applicable laws regarding commitment and involuntary administration of medications. Works with Healthcare Recruiter and Mental Health Leadership in all steps of recruitment, hiring, and retention of psychiatrists and nurse practitioners on MHU Communicates to staff and monitors performance and workload expectations consistent with local and national VA standards. Provides employee feedback regarding clinical performance on a regular basis. Assists in developing plans to improved performance when deficits are identified. Coaches and mentors staff to promote and encourage continued medical learning and clinical excellence. Rewards employee contributions and performance which exceed performances. Completes FPPE/OPPE and chart audits for credentialing of subordinate staff. Administers leave request and clinic cancellations for subordinate staff. Participates in MH Service Supervisor meetings and assists other Supervisors/Program Managers in aspects related to best practices, standards of care for psychiatric practice Develops the schedule of work for the MHU team, including ensuring sufficient coverage for planned absences, and works with MH Leadership to develop plans for coverage in the event of unexpected absences Takes the lead in preparation for accreditation surveys for the MHU team, including assisting with documentation, participating MHEOCC rounds, and related survey follow up.
