Overview
Atlantic Health System is seeking a Perinatal Safety Nurse Manager at Morristown Medical Center.
Responsibilities
Patient Safety Advocate
Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in the clinical setting.
- Promotes a just, non-punitive patient safety environment throughout the organization
- Develops strong, professional relationships with all members of the hospital and MCIC teams
- Demonstrates consistent adherence to best practice and compliance with regulatory requirements/policies/procedures
- Collaborates with clinical leadership to successfully integrate patient safety principles into current and future practice
- Serves as resource and support to the clinical team members participating in the patient safety initiative(s). Remains current with national standards of practice and safety issues and disseminates pertinent patient safety information to teams
- Brings patient and staff patient safety/quality of care concerns to appropriate clinical forums
- Oversees, participates and/or collaborates in initiatives related to creating a blame-resistant culture for medical error reporting
- Collaborates with staff to identify adverse events and near-miss occurrences. Proactively identifies potential future problems and develops logical solutions
Performance Improvement/ Project Management
Demonstrates understanding of project management including data collection/analysis and performance improvement methodologies
- Utilizes accepted quality management principles and process improvement methods
- Facilitates Patient Safety clinical initiatives in collaboration with designated hospital leaders
- Develops logical action plans with realistic timeframes to meet project objectives
- Identifies barriers to successfully accomplishing goals and objectives in timely manner and effectively utilizes resources and tools to meet objectives and find solutions
- Collaborates with teams to identify, collect and report appropriate project metrics
- Tracks and documents project progress, observations, and milestones
- Shares data analysis and project progress with all stakeholders in timely manner
- Play an active role in the development of a culture of safety
- Participates in Root Cause Analyses and Failure Mode & Effects Analyses as they relate to patient safety in the clinical environment as appropriate. Collaborates with Risk Management and Quality Management on the identification of trends and the implementation of corrective actions
- Participates in conference calls and attends all meetings as scheduled to collaborate and share best practices, lessons learned and emerging trends
- Participates in performance improvement meetings as appropriate
Teamwork and Communication

- Serves as liaison between project participants, staff, and other stakeholders
- Supports the critical elements of effective team communication including demonstration of respect, active participation, and effective listening, discussing and questioning to ensure understanding
- Provides clear, concise and accurate communication. Serves as objective entity to encourage communication and facilitate constructive conflict resolution
Training and Education
Develops and delivers patient safety and loss prevention educational programs to staff
- Consistent with organizational prioritization, develops and delivers patient safety and loss prevention educational programs to staff
- Identifies learning needs of staff on patient safety related issues. Conducts formal and informal training regarding patient safety related topics as necessary
- Participates in the Team Training program 'train the trainer' sessions in order to teach teamwork and communication skills to others
- Facilitates simulation sessions for clinical and high-risk situations with focus on enhancing effective teamwork and communication
- Fosters and promotes participation by all clinicians in educational programs and clinical simulation
- Facilitates and supports teamwork-training program for all department members and as new members join the healthcare team.Collaborates with and educates multidisciplinary staff members of process changes as a result of the adoption of recommended practices
Qualifications
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Knowledge and expertise in the following areas: Policies, Procedures and Standards of Practice, Joint Commission and Regulatory Compliance, Orientation and Training, Staff Development and Education and Continuous Quality Improvement
- Strong project management and analytical skills to effectively execute patient centered safety initiatives
- Ability to collect event information and organize into a coherent narrative
- Ability to communicate effectively in formal and oral presentations
- Skilled in handling/diffusing difficult conversations and interviews with tact and diplomacy
- Ability to coordinate and provide interdisciplinary education programs
- Must practice discretion and adhere to institutional confidentiality guidelines at all times
- Proven abilities to effectively interface with multi-disciplinary team members, demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skills
- TeamsSTEPPS/HRO or similar program training or facilitation
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and web browsers
- Ability to learn new computer applications used in hospitals
Minimum Education:
Education:
License/Certifications:
- Current New Jersey Registered Nurse licensure
- TeamSTEPPS/HRO/ASHRM/CPHQ or similar training or facilitation preferred
Relevant Experience:
- 5 years of direct clinical care
- 3 - 5 years of RN experience in acute care Labor & Delivery
- Labor & Delivery Nursing Progressive Leadership roles such as charge nurse or educator experience strongly preferred
