This position is located in the Department of Medicine, Albany Stratton VA Medical Center (SVAMC), Albany, New York and supports the Network 2 Mission to care for our Veterans with compassion and excellence. This position is responsible for providing a broad range of Cardiology services to Veterans receiving care at the VAMC. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. The Cardiology service is responsible for providing cardiovascular care and associated medical services to patients of the Medical Center and will function as support to the hospitalist, through inpatient consults; as support to the Primary Care Providers and Urgent Care providers via phone, e-consults or outpatient consults. SCOPE OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: The incumbent must be a Board Eligible/Board Certified Cardiologist who will lead and manage\nthe staff of a very active academic and clinical cardiology section. Clinical responsibilities\nprimarily include general cardiology skills such as echocardiography, exercise and\npharmacologic stress testing, Holter monitor and EKG interpretations, diagnosis and\nmanagement of arrhythmias. Skills in the performance, supervision and interpretation of\nadvanced cardiac imaging studies, including nuclear cardiology, transthoracic and transesophageal\nechocardiography are highly desired. Other duties include managing patients on the\ninpatient telemetry unit and outpatient specialty clinics, performing cardiology consultations,\nand participating in cardiac catheterization, if qualified. The Cardiology section is closely\naffiliated with Albany Medical College, and responsible for fellowship, resident and medical\nstudent training. It is expected that the applicant is qualified to be a full-time faculty member at\nthe affiliated medical school, and to participate in supervisory roles in fellowship and residency\neducational programs. Research experience and the ability to attract grant funding is highly\ndesirable. The Cardiology specialists will ensure provision of\nindicated services for conditions in both in-patient and out-patient clinical settings, including\ntelemedicine. This care must be delivered in accordance with hospital policy and meet\ncommunity standards and pertains to outpatients as well as inpatients. The Chief Cardiologist\nalways works within her or his privileges. The Chief Cardiologist is expected to maintain current\nknowledge and skills.
