Position is based at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. The Stead Family Children’s Hospital is a 200 plus bed hospital facility. The Associate Chief Nurse Officer for Children’s Hospital & Patient Care under the direction of the system CNE has the accountability and responsibility for the practice of nursing, the development of nursing services, and the evaluation and implementation of clinical programs and services in the Children’s Patient Care service line in collaboration with the CAO, medical staff, key leaders of the multi-disciplinary team and other management. The ACNO ensures and fosters a high level of collaboration with highly-matrix teams and overall systems environment, providing leadership and direction for all aspects of nursing, particularly efficient and cost-effective operations, service excellence, patient safety, and quality initiatives. The ACNO provides strategic leadership and day-to-day operational guidance and oversight associated with direct patient care activities and clinical education and development. The ACNO maintains primary accountability for clinical operations ensuring the integration of comprehensive clinical operational and nursing professional practice plans for Stead Family Children’s Hospital departments, collaborating/supporting the UIHC System CNE in planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and evaluating hospital-wide nursing/patient care services- leading and aligning the practices/processes/systems to the Children’s Service Line including: nursing practice standards and policies; staffing; nursing strategic planning; organizational and staff development; and maintaining necessary regulatory and compliance approvals and quality accreditations. The ACNO drives, supports, and models a service-oriented culture based on employee engagement, quality, patient safety, service excellence, fiscal responsibility and the overall patient experience with a 24/7 responsibility.
This position reports to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and Women’s Services Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) with a matrix/partnering reporting structure to the system Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) of UIHC, providing administrative coverage support in the absence of the CAO or CNE. Periodically, on a scheduled basis, serves as UIHC administrator-on-call for a 24-hour day, seven consecutive days.
Direct reports to the ACNO include: Associate Director of Neonatal Services, Transport Services, Staffing Office, Simulation; Associate Director of Pediatric Acute Critical Care Services & Financial Services; Associate Director Perioperative & Procedural Services; Associate Director, Patient Family-Centered Services; Nursing Practice Leaders and House Operations Managers. Areas of responsibility are defined specifically per Children’s service line specifications that span across departmental areas of inpatient, outpatient, and community outreach including indirect matrix reporting relationships with the Director of Continuity of Care-CWS; Director Behavioral Health for Pediatrics; Associate Director of Women’s Services; Associate Director of Quality &Operation’s Improvement-CWS; and APRN’s.
The ACNO is responsible for assessing the environment, forecasting trends, transmitting values, communicating ideas, developing and implementing policies, managing and initiating innovative systems and programs that promote excellence in patient experience/ service, quality and safety for patient care delivery, and that create an excellent place to work. This position provides nursing personnel with leadership, decision-making, and direction in patient care services and defined areas, ensuring nurses and other members of the patient care team feel empowered to serve as patient representatives/advocates, and creates a nursing environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved.
The ACNO aligns the priorities of the patient care unit leadership dyads in collaboration with the medical or clinical directors and the inter-professional teams of the Children’s service line to assure the operational and clinical standards promote a center of quality care and work environment excellence to achieve organizational and strategic goals.
The ACNO will work in close partnership with executives from the health system, hospital campuses, physician leaders and groups, and staff within Children’s to develop comprehensive access to care including evaluation, planning and implementation of both inpatient and outpatient innovative patient/family centered approach care models which enhance the delivery of patient care quality and efficiency.
Along with the health system and hospital executive committees will establish key collaboration partnerships with physicians and administrative colleagues, community providers, and interest groups influencing and developing both internal and external constituencies to promote and coordinate the Children’s service line throughout the community and neighboring market areas.
· A Master’s degree in Nursing or related field is required.
· If Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate of Science degree in Nursing is required. A doctorate (PhD or DNP) is highly desirable.
· Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
· BLS for Healthcare Providers/CPR is required.
· An ANCC recognized certification with a Nurse Executive or Nurse Executive Advanced ANCC certification required within 12 months of hire.
· Active member in a nursing or professional healthcare organization.
· Comprehensive (7-10 years) progressive leadership experience in a complex health organization or academic health care environment related to pediatric specialties that demonstrates knowledge of organization, operations, and coordination of hospital activities.
· Strong operations skills and the ability to execute/translate strategy priorities into operational reality, aligning communication, accountabilities, resource capabilities, internal systems to ensure strategic priorities yield measurable and sustainable results.
· Experience includes a balance of strategic new program development and innovation combined with operational improvement.
· Ability to identify and drive organizational and cultural changes using new approaches to improve results by transforming organizational culture, systems, or products/services.
· Knowledgeable of the laws and regulatory/accreditation standards.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships through consultative, collaboration and communication skills necessary to partner with teams within Children’s Service Line, across the Health System, Medical College, physicians, patients, families and others from the community to execute and achieve program goals.
· Ability to contribute and execute influence/negotiation strategies that persuade key stakeholders to take actions that will advance share organizational strategic interest/goals.
