Vanderbilt's Department of Health Policy is seeking qualified candidates to provide faculty and staff with leadership in constructing, developing, and modifying large and complex databases supporting departmental analytic research. The position is responsible for independent management of secure data for research purposes. The ideal candidate has experience designing, configuring, updating, testing and maintaining core databases independently.
The successful applicant is expected to design research-oriented data infrastructure and write reproducible programs to generate customized analytical datasets for research projects using large healthcare claims relational databases (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare databases). Expertise with and use of structured code (SAS experience is preferred) to produce modules of complex logic including coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs is required.

Key functions and expected technical capabilities:
Database Design and Maintenance: Has expertise in designing and maintaining advanced, complex databases. Demonstrates the ability to bring all the various project pieces together to complete the process of developing databases for research purposes. Has previously worked with at least two relational database systems that have variations with the way data types are represented and the way data are stored.
Preparation of datasets and supporting documentation: Demonstrates substantial expertise in designing and writing reproducible and efficient programs to generate customized analytical datasets for research projects using large healthcare claims relational databases (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare or other administrative large claims databases). Develops supporting documentation for efficient revision and modification of the programs as well as end user documentation for appropriate analysis and use of the data.
Database Updates: Monitors and maintains data management processes and performs data quality control assessments. Updates core databases by merging newly available data. Generates appropriate program documentation for data updates and upgrades. Performs assessments to assure consistency and integrity of the data. Maintains core data compliance with State, Federal, institutional, and other data steward security regulations.
Data analyses: Uses quantitative research methods skills to support small to medium research projects. Contributes to the design, coordination and conduct of research projects.
Leadership: Serves as a technical resource to programmers, analysts, and faculty in the department and greater VUMC community. Directs programmer efforts, schedules and attends meetings, documents action items, interfaces with investigators, and provides professional support and leadership for programmer/core staff. Seeks to understand current and future needs of relevant stakeholders and customize services to better address them. Provides ongoing support and coaching in a constructive manner to increase programmers' effectiveness. Stewards departmental resources by applying understanding of the departmental work to effectively manage resources for a department/core.
This is a full-time position.
