This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Major duties and responsibilities include: Provide direct patient care, offer support to the provider staff and work with additional interdisciplinary staff. Work closely with the Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) of the GEC&R Care line, Associate Chief Nurse for GEC&R at the site and collaborate with the GEC&R Care Line Manager. Will educate Veterans, staff, and family about geriatric syndromes, functional assessment, and end-of-life issues. This will include, but is not limited to, documentation, process workflow and other functionality regarding necessary clinical systems. Will work with staff and physicians to optimize the usage of clinical systems to promote quality outcomes and provide support in accordance with organizational goals. He/she will work closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure that the highest standards of quality and services are maintained. He/she serves as a liaison between customers and other departments and services and will work directly with all levels of the organization on projects, committees and teams to meet the overall needs of GEC&R and the facility. Admit, follow and discharge Community Living Center (CLC) patients as needed to maintain good patient flow- Provide geriatric and palliative care consultation for the Veteran population. Coordinates medical care and participates in the establishment of policies, procedures, and guidelines necessary for clinical care in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team. Ensure that patients have appropriate physician coverage and ensure provision of physician and health care practitioner services. Ensures employees receive constructive feedback are realistically appraised against clearly defined and communicated performance standards and are held accountable for appropriate levels of performance and conduct. Provide specific guidelines for physician performance expectations for the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) and the Pay for Performance (P4P) programs. Assist the facility to monitor the performance of health care staff by serving on the Medical Records Committee (MRC). And performing ongoing chart reviews. Facilitate feedback to physicians and other health care practitioners on performance and practices and work collaboratively with other Services/Departments to improve patient flow and the overall patient experience. Monitor the activities of physicians, PAs and Nurse Practitioners, and intervene as needed on behalf of residents or administration of the facility. Review and assume a leadership role in the adequate protection of residents' rights, advance care planning, and other ethical issues. Obtain the services of qualified professionals to serve as consultants to any resident need that enhances quality of care. Review recommendations of interdisciplinary treatment team and take appropriate and timely action as needed to implement recommendations.
