The role you’ll contribute: The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the department’s 24/7 sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection. Collaborates with Surgery leadership and staff to ensure instrumentation needs are met on a daily basis. Acts as a liaison between SPD and other hospital departments to ensure availability of instrumentation and equipment as needed for patient care within the facility. Completes interviews, staff evaluations, and manages the disciplinary process for staff. Ensures staffing patterns and monthly schedules meet department needs and are in line with labor management standards. Manages and plans the orientation of new employees. Responsible for performance improvement activities in the department, development of action plans, and follow-up; participates in system wide committees related to sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection; and is knowledgeable about regulatory standards and national society standards related to sterile processing. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining professional relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Qualifications

Plans staff assignments for the shift based on Surgery and other procedure area volumes.
Prioritizes work throughout the shift to ensure instrumentation and equipment are available as needed.
Completes monthly staff schedule and ensures all gaps in staffing are covered.
Reviews labor on a daily basis to ensure staffing matches workload and that labor standards are achieved.
Provides justification for staff overtime on a daily basis.
Participates in budget review, plans, and development with management team.
Monitors sterilization practices to ensure all standards are met.
Keeps accurate records of all sterilizer loads.
Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization parameters and takes corrective action if parameters are not met.
Attends system level committee meetings for sterilization standards and practices.
Performs departmental rounds to ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.
Makes recommendations and assists in development of corrective action plans as needed.
Ensures safe work practices for all employees.
Monitors staff use of PPE in decontamination area.
Promotes a safe environment.
Uses appropriate action in emergency situations, demonstrates awareness and control of hazards which may endanger patients, visitors and employees.
Monitors work environment to ensure infection control standards are met.
Ensures department is cleaned on a daily basis.
Monitors environmental controls (temp and humidity, air flow) and takes corrective action as needed.
Identifies and reports any other environmental concerns to the management team.
Acts as a liaison between all hospital departments that utilize Central Services to ensure needs of the customer are met.
Communicates with Surgery staff to ensure instrumentation is available as needed for cases. Collaborates with Materials Management to ensure supplies and equipment are available for patient care units where needed.
Develops orientation plan for new employees.
Meets with orientee on a regular basis to assess progress.
Completes employee evaluations in an accurate and timely manner.
Manages required disciplinary processes with employees and develops action plans as needed.
Meets regularly with Central Service supervisors/leads to assist with any staff or workflow problems.
Maintains professional competency by participating in continuing education and appropriate learning experiences both internal and external.
As appropriate and approved, attends pertinent conferences and seminars regarding sterile processing, business, or management.
The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:
Ability to communicate by reading, writing legibly, speaking and comprehending English effectively in order to carry out job requirements required.
Knowledge of AAMI, TJC, HFAP, OSHA, and relevant infection prevention standards required.
Knowledge of surgical instrumentation required.
Ability to manage stresses and handles challenging situations and personalities required.
Computer knowledge and skills required.
Associates in a Healthcare related field or Certified Surgical Technologist or 5 yrs proven Sterile Processing experience in a hospital setting with a National Certification in Sterile Processing
Management experience required
CSPD Management course preferred
