The RN, Risk Manager provides direct staff support to front line staff, Service Chiefs and others in the development, implementation and coordination of a Risk Management Program. The incumbent is clinically and administratively responsible to the Assistant Director of Quality and Safety. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Develops, implements, and maintains a Risk Management program that evaluates and mitigates the medical center's risk. Works with the medical center's Office of QSV to promote quality in clinical practice in the development of guidelines, criteria, and models for the management of risk. Analyzes data and reports to identify the need for change, minimize risk, and ensure effectiveness of clinical improvements. Assists Office of Quality and Safety and key leaders as required, in policy review, formulation and communication, implementation, and evaluation, and in setting of organizational priorities related to Risk Management. Monitors the overall Risk Management Program for compliance with policy, patterns and/or trends. Monitors the follow-up of recommendations specific to risk resulting from the Joint Commission and other accreditation and external review visits. Ensures that findings of risk activities, including an annual assessment of the effectiveness of the program, are used to modify and improve the program and facilitate the accomplishment of QSV goals and objectives. Assists in medical center activities and preparation for the Joint Commission and other accreditation and external reviews. Develops baseline references and profiles and identified statistical deviations or variances which might affect risk management efforts and/or might merit additional study. Researches, interprets, identifies, develops and presents educational programs for health care professionals and support services regarding risk management. Maintains current membership and establishes effective collegial relationships with other professional organizations and the larger health care community on a local, state, and national level. Acquires and maintains current knowledge relevant to the principles, practices and techniques associated with nursing and other clinical professions through literature and periodical review, workshop attendance, and/or the use of sound bench marking practices Serves as consultant on clinical issues and/or performance improvement initiatives pertaining to risk management. Plans, organizes, and directs risk management activities; coordinates and serves as technical support for tort claims and administrative investigation boards. Screens and analyzes medical records against quality, safety and service measures that comply with state, federal and regulatory quality initiatives, using professional critical thinking skills and knowledge of clinical care guidelines and experience to determine if there is cause to send to a physician reviewer based on the clinical indicators. Cross train and provide coverage in the absence of Peer Review Coordinator. Assists designated peer reviewer in case review performance and documentation including providing education regarding the peer review process. Completes/contributes quarterly reports for organization, VISN, and VHA related to interdisciplinary Peer Review Activities at VAPAHCS. Assists Office of Quality and Safety and key leaders as required, in policy review, formulation and communication, implementation, and evaluation, and in setting of organizational priorities. Assists in medical center activities and preparation for the Joint Commission and other accreditation and external reviews. Coordinates Interdisciplinary Peer Review Committee activities.
