The Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Education will perform critical administrative, educational, and clinical duties to assist the ACOS/E in his/her responsibility to provide oversight of the health professions trainee education programs at the Louisville VA. The DEPUTY ACOS/E position requires experience in medical education and leadership to effectively execute the numerous, complex oversight responsibilities required for Health Professions Trainee programs at the Louisville VAMC. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Experienced physician and educator who is board certified in a medical specialty relevant to the VA patient population who is motivated to learn the policies and procedures associated with the VA educational mission. Must qualify for a faculty appointment in the academic affiliate department most relevant to his/her expertise and training. Prior experience as a service or section chief (or equivalent leadership position) or as a Graduate Medical Education (GME) program director, GME Site Director, or Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) Clerkship Director is desirable. Duties include, but are not limited to: Serve as a facility-based learning leader who will assist the ACOS/E in his/her oversight, responsibility, and accountability for all accredited and affiliated clinical trainee programs within the Louisville VA Medical Center. Follow all Federal Laws and VHA and Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) policies and procedures in the execution of their duties. Provide leadership to the support staff in the ACOS/E Service in conjunction with the ACOS/E. Assist with creating and maintaining positive relationships with academic affiliates and will help create a local education environment that is conducive to learning and supportive of HPTs. Participate in the ongoing evaluation of the quality of VA educational programs to ensure effective execution of educational objectives in addition to ensuring that HPTs contribute to quality health care for Veterans. Assist organizing and monitoring the Education Service Budget which includes participating in Resident Disbursement Agreement procedures in accordance with all Federal and OAA policies and regulations. In executing fiscal responsibilities, the Deputy ACOS/E will be conscious of resource allocation and cognizant of local medical center operations. Interface with all interagency services such as Human Resources, Fiscal, Clinical Service Lines, and Research, to effectively execute local training programs and onboard HPTs. Provide clinical care to veterans in his/her area of specialty 80% of the time. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30PM. Occasional call may be required.
