This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Experience as a VA attending physician, preferably for over two years, strongly preferred. Experience as a VA attending physician in Polytrauma/TBI clinic strongly preferred. Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. Responsible for routine national level Polytrauma/TBI clinic responsibilities, e.g. annual presentation, ensuring information regarding use of Polytrauma/TBI National System of Care funding is reported appropriately. - Responsible for supervision of selected staff and their evaluations, including OPPE/FPPE and other supervisory duties. - Monitor and ensure compliance with expected clinic operational and quality metrics (SAIL, HEDIS, etc.). -An integral member of the Interdisciplinary Polytrauma/TBI Team and Rehabilitation Service Team as needed in the delivery of care for patients.-Participates in Service Quality Improvement/Performance Improvement activities as approved or assigned. - Participates in selected committees as designated.- Participation in Quality Management activities - Expected to participate in appropriate continuing education activities as necessary.- Familiar with and adheres to the Medical Staff Bylaws of this facility. Position Summary:- Responsibilities include providing patient care in the Polytrauma/TBI clinic, other clinics as determined by departmental need, as well as by incumbent's procedural skills and interest (e.g. EMG and procedure clinic, including use of ultrasound), and inpatient care on the inpatient rehabilitation unit, as well as inpatient Blind Rehabilitation, including inpatient consults. In addition to performing direct patient care, incumbent must be able to act as a physician leader in clinical settings, providing appropriate clinical direction for the work of Service nurse practitioners, and possible PAs, and other staff, regardless of if said staff member is an official direct report of the incumbent. - Provide physiatry services as specified in his/her clinical privileges. - Responsible for providing the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient/family needed before conducting invasive procedures.- Evaluates the patient to assess any changes in the physical status, and make recommendations for continued care as needed. - Participates in various hospital committees, department and hospital in-service programs and acquires CME's as required. - Provides assessment of physical and functional status of Veterans in Rehabilitation Service clinics and inpatient rehabilitation unit and inpatient Blind Rehabilitation - Provide recommendations and works with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care to provide optimal functioning, decrease level of pain, and improve quality of life for Veterans. - Provides support to the Polytrauma Management program which includes training of providers within the Medical Center on various aspects of assessment and management of care for multiple diagnoses related to the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation. - Collaborates with the Coordinators of the Polytrauma/TBI, amputee, EMG. - Makes recommendations regarding all resource management issues; including equipment, space, and educational opportunities etc. - Consults requesting Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation services are performed in a timely manner and that the results are made readily available to the referring practitioners.
