Loyola Medicine is actively recruiting a Chief Resident for the 2023-2024 academic year for the Loyola Medicine - MacNeal Hospital Transitional Year & Internal Medicine Residency Programs located in Berwyn, Illinois.
This is a salaried opportunity with plentiful moonlighting opportunities. Each year we invite three chiefs to join our team in conjunction with one of our sponsoring programs, Internal Medicine (IM). One chief is selected to work most closely with our 16 transitional year (TY) residents as our primary TY Chief. Importantly, this chief also works with the Internal Medicine chief residents and 42 IM residents. This one-year position at MacNeal provides outstanding opportunities for recent residency graduates to further develop their teaching and leadership skills while building on clinical experience as an attending physician. Several of our Chiefs over the years have gone on to work in academic medicine, pursue competitive fellowships, and work in hospital medicine.
MacNeal is a 374-bed hospital with three on-site residency programs (Transitional Year, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine). The chief resident position includes educational, administrative, and patient care responsibilities. The Chief Resident teaches residents and medical students through a variety of chief resident-led conferences. Our Chiefs lead hospital-wide teaching conferences and are also invited to give CME credited noontime lectures that benefit attending physicians on the medical staff. Our Chiefs represent the residency programs on several key hospital committees. The TY Chief Resident helps supervise the TY residents as they create their patient safety presentations. The Chiefs manage multi-module simulation workshops for procedures and assist with high fidelity simulations. Finally, our chief residents supervise residents as a continuity clinic and inpatient medicine attending.
By the end of the academic year, our chief residents have a deeper understanding of hospital leadership and administration, graduate medical education and administrative skills, such as proficiency in scheduling. These experiences are invaluable whether one chooses to work in a hospital setting or move on to private practice.
